Objective To investigate the differences in canopy characteristics, photosynthetic characteristics and fruit quality of apricot-plum 'Weidi' under evacuation layered shape and open-center shape in Aksu area of southern Xinjiang, and to determine the suitable tree form for high-quality and high-yield cultivation, so as to provide theoretical basis and technical support for tree training and transformation of 'Weidi'.
Methods Six-year-old 'Weidi' trees were used as materials to study the effects of evacuation layered shape and open-center shape on tree structure, canopy characteristics, diurnal variation of photosynthesis, yield, and fruit quality.
Results Leaf area index and photosynthetic pigment content were significantly higher in evacuation layered shape than in open-center shape. The daily average net photosynthetic rate of leaves at veraison and maturity stages was significantly higher in evacuation layered shape than in open-center shape. The contents of total soluble solids, vitamin C, soluble sugar, and organic acid in fruits of evacuation layered shape were significantly higher than those of open-center shape.
Conclusion Apricot-plum 'Weidi' is more suitable for evacuation layered shape in Aksu area of southern Xinjiang. evacuation layered shape has higher leaf area index, stronger photosynthetic capacity at veraison and maturity stages, higher commodity fruit rate, better fruit color, and significantly better internal quality than open-center shape.
